Digital Landscape in Bath & North East Somerset

Bath & North East Somerset (B&NES) is home to a thriving and fast growing digital and technology sector. As part of the wider Bath & Bristol area, often referred to as Silicon Gorge, the region is recognised as one of the UK’s most dynamic tech clusters, hosting worldclass companies in artificial intelligence, fintech, digital health, quantum technology, cybersecurity and creative tech.

Broadband in B&NES

Broadband Connectivity

B&NES region continues to benefit from major public and private sector investment in broadband infrastructure:

  • Full Fibre (FTTP) is now available to 66.8% of premises (Dec 2025).
  • Gigabit capable broadband reaches 76.5% of the district.
  • Superfast coverage (30Mbps+) stands at 96.3%, ensuring strong baseline connectivity for homes and businesses.

B&NES is working with Openreach on the Government-funded Project Gigabit scheme to bring ultrafast connectivity to hard-to-each areas. Residents may also benefit from the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme.

Mobile connectivity in our city

We are working proactively to improve mobile coverage and capacity in Bath city centre by using small cell technology, which aim to:

  • Reduce mobile notspots
  • Improve reliability during high-traffic events
  • Test new approaches to mobile infrastructure in a heritage setting

Digital Inclusion

Digital inclusion is a core priority for B&NES council. While our region is home to world leading tech businesses, many residents still lack access to devices, connectivity, or basic digital skills. We work with a network of partners to reduce digital poverty and ensure that everyone can participate fully in modern life.

DonateIT and Bath Digital Drive refurbish donated laptops and devices and redistribute them to individuals who cannot afford their own equipment. All devices are professionally data wiped to GDPR standards, supporting safe and sustainable reuse.

Residents cannot self-refer for a device but can be referred by a recognised referral partner. These include:

  • Bath and North East Somerset Council teams (Business & Skills, Children’s Services, Housing, Social Care)
  • Schools and colleges
  • Charities and voluntary organisations
  • Churches and faith groups
  • Jobcentres and employment support services
  • Community organisations and housing officers

Where to Donate Devices

Residents and businesses can donate unwanted laptops or tech at:

  • Bath Central Library
  • Keynsham Library
  • Midsomer Norton Library
  • Share & Repair, Bath
  • DonateIT and Bath Digital Drive drop-off locations (listed on their websites)

Every donated device helps someone access education, employment, healthcare, online services and stay connected.
